Pain in the neck, upper back, or shoulder area can have many causes. Start by checking for warning signs, then note where symptoms travel and what changes them. If the situation is not urgent, an appropriate evaluation can help clarify the next step.
UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN
Is it neck pain, shoulder pain, or upper back pain?
People use phrases such as “pain in my neck,” “back of neck pain,” “neck and shoulder pain,” or “upper back tightness” to describe overlapping areas. The location alone does not identify the cause. Muscle strain, joint irritation, an injury, nerve involvement, and problems unrelated to the musculoskeletal system can produce similar descriptions.
Notice whether discomfort stays in one area or travels into a shoulder, arm, or hand. Tingling, numbness, weakness, headache, dizziness, a lump, swelling, fever, or symptoms after an injury are important details to share with a healthcare professional.
SAFETY FIRST
When does neck pain need urgent medical care?
Seek prompt medical attention when neck pain follows a fall, collision, blow, or other significant injury; when an arm or hand cannot be moved normally; or when symptoms include new numbness, tingling, weakness, trouble walking or balancing, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or severe pain that does not let you get comfortable.
Call 911 for possible emergency symptoms.
Call 911 for neck pain with chest pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, arm or jaw pain, or other possible heart-attack symptoms. Fever, a severe headache, and a neck so stiff that the chin cannot reach the chest also need emergency assessment. Do not drive yourself or wait for a chiropractic appointment.
A neck lump or swollen glands, pain that worsens when lying down or wakes you at night, or symptoms that persist or worsen should be discussed with a medical professional. This guide cannot diagnose their cause.
PREPARE FOR AN EVALUATION
What should I track about neck and shoulder pain?
- Where the discomfort begins and whether it reaches the shoulder blade, arm, hand, head, or upper back.
- Whether it feels aching, sharp, stiff, burning, tingling, numb, or weak.
- Whether an injury, long drive, computer work, lifting, or a change in sleep position came first.
- Which movements, work positions, pillows, or times of day make it better or worse.
- Any headache, dizziness, vision change, fever, balance problem, lump, swelling, or difficulty swallowing.
- Your health conditions, medicines, recent procedures, and previous neck, shoulder, or spinal problems.
If discomfort is mainly in the lower back, read our Farmington lower-back pain guide. Pain that travels from the back into a leg is covered in our sciatica guide.
EVERYDAY COMFORT
What can I do before an appointment?
For mild symptoms without warning signs, avoid positions or activities that clearly aggravate the pain. A supportive pillow and gentle, comfortable movement may help some people, but there is no single “best” pillow or sleeping position for every neck problem. Do not force movement, copy an exercise that worsens symptoms, or use self-care to delay needed medical attention.
Contact a healthcare professional when symptoms persist, recur, worsen, or interfere with sleep, work, driving, balance, or use of an arm or hand. Ask before trying stretches or exercises if you have had a recent injury, surgery, osteoporosis, nerve symptoms, or another condition that affects what is safe.
WHERE CHIROPRACTIC MAY FIT
Can a chiropractor help with neck pain?
Chiropractors commonly evaluate musculoskeletal concerns involving the neck, upper back, and shoulders. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that spinal manipulation may help some acute neck pain, and manipulation or mobilization may help some chronic neck pain. The research has limitations, results vary, and treatment is not appropriate for every person or every cause of pain.
Evaluation and informed consent come first.
A chiropractor should take a detailed history, perform an appropriate examination, explain reasonable options and risks, and refer when symptoms require another kind of care. NCCIH notes that temporary soreness, stiffness, or headache can occur after spinal manipulation and that rare serious complications have been reported, particularly with manipulation involving the neck.
“Upper cervical” refers to the upper part of the neck, but a search phrase does not determine which technique—or whether chiropractic treatment—is appropriate. This page does not claim a special upper-cervical certification. Call the office to ask what methods Dr. Brittany Anderson, D.C. offers and whether an evaluation may be suitable.

A VISIT IN FARMINGTON
What happens at a neck-pain evaluation?
- Describe the pattern. Explain when symptoms began, where they travel, and what makes them better or worse.
- Share your full health history. Include injuries, medicines, neurological symptoms, vascular conditions, osteoporosis, recent procedures, and other care.
- Complete an appropriate examination. Anderson can assess whether the concern appears musculoskeletal and whether chiropractic care or another referral may be suitable.
- Discuss realistic options. Ask about the proposed technique, alternatives, expected benefits, possible risks, and when the plan should be reconsidered.

Neck pain questions in Farmington
Can I discuss options besides a neck adjustment?
Yes. Ask Dr. Brittany to explain the proposed technique, possible benefits and risks, and alternatives before care. Your history, examination and preferences help guide the decision. You can raise concerns about any technique.
What if neck pain started after a collision or fall?
Neck pain after a significant injury needs prompt medical assessment. Do not assume it is a routine muscle problem or wait for a chiropractic appointment when symptoms are severe or include weakness, numbness, balance problems or difficulty breathing.
How will we know whether care is helping?
Discuss goals such as comfort, movement or daily activities and agree on a review point with Dr. Brittany. Improvement can take time, but follow-up visits should depend on your findings and progress. Contact the office if symptoms change, worsen or are not improving.
