At a glance: An evaluation can help you understand your back symptoms and discuss care options, risks, and how progress will be reviewed. Chiropractic care may help some types of low back pain; results vary and urgent symptoms need medical attention.

Back pain can interrupt work, sleep and time with family. Finding a suitable next step starts with understanding the symptoms and considering your health history. At Rozenberg Family Chiropractic in Farmington, Michigan, Dr. Brittany Anderson, D.C. can evaluate musculoskeletal concerns and discuss whether chiropractic care or a referral may be appropriate.

Where chiropractic care may fit

Spinal manipulation is one of several nondrug options for some types of low back pain. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that it may offer small improvements in pain and function. It is not suitable for every person or every cause of pain, and research does not establish a guaranteed result for an individual patient. Read NCCIH’s explanation of spinal manipulation, evidence and risks.

Discuss the expected benefits, possible side effects and alternatives before deciding on treatment. Temporary soreness or stiffness can occur, and underlying health conditions can affect risk.

What to discuss at an evaluation

Describe when the pain began, where you feel it, whether it travels into a leg, and which activities make it better or worse. Bring information about injuries, medical conditions, medicines and other treatments you have tried.

A history and examination help guide the next steps. Ask what the findings suggest, what treatment would involve, how progress would be assessed, and when another healthcare professional should be involved. You can also review our Farmington back-pain guide and first-visit information before contacting the office.

When to seek medical care

Back pain after an injury, or accompanied by fever, unexplained weight loss, trouble urinating, or leg weakness or numbness, needs medical assessment. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases explains these warning signs and common causes. Seek emergency care for sudden or severe symptoms; do not delay urgent medical attention while waiting for a chiropractic appointment.
