Pain in the lower back, on the right or left side, or across the back can have many causes. Start by checking for warning signs, then gather a few details about your symptoms. If the situation is not urgent, a conversation with a qualified health professional can help you decide on an appropriate next step.
STEP ONE
Check whether your back pain needs urgent medical attention.
Most back pain is not an emergency, but some symptoms should be assessed promptly. Seek urgent medical care if back pain follows a serious fall or injury, or comes with new bowel or bladder problems, trouble urinating, numbness around the groin, significant leg weakness or numbness, fever, unexplained weight loss, difficulty walking, or pain that is severe, constant, or rapidly worsening.
Do not wait for a chiropractic appointment in an emergency.
Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for sudden or severe symptoms, major trauma, new loss of bowel or bladder control, or other symptoms that make you think you may be having an emergency.
This page provides general information and cannot determine the cause of your pain.
DESCRIBE THE LOCATION
Is it lower back, upper back, right-side, or left-side pain?
“Lower back pain” and “low back pain” usually describe discomfort between the bottom of the ribs and the buttocks. Some people feel pain across the center; others describe right-side or left-side back pain. Pain higher between the shoulder blades is usually described as upper-back pain and may overlap with neck or shoulder symptoms.
The location is useful information, but it does not diagnose the cause. One-sided back pain may be musculoskeletal, but back or side pain can also come from internal organs or other conditions. Tell a healthcare professional about urinary symptoms, abdominal or chest pain, fever, nausea, rash, breathing difficulty, pregnancy, recent illness, or unexplained weight loss.
If discomfort is mainly in the neck, shoulder, or upper back, use our Farmington neck and shoulder pain guide.
STEP TWO
If it is not an emergency, note what you are feeling.
A clear description can make a phone call or appointment more useful. Consider writing down:
- When the pain started and whether an injury or unusual activity came first.
- Where it hurts and whether pain travels into a buttock or leg.
- Whether you have tingling, numbness, weakness, or changes in balance.
- Which movements, positions, or times of day make it better or worse.
- Your health conditions, recent procedures, medicines, and other care you have tried.
If pain travels into your leg, our Farmington sciatica guide explains additional symptoms worth noting. For neck, shoulder, or upper-back symptoms, use our neck-pain guide. If long shifts behind the wheel are also leaving your feet sore or numb, read our foot-pain guide for truck drivers and other professional drivers.
PRACTICAL FIRST STEPS
What can I do for mild back pain today?
If you have no warning signs and the pain is mild, avoid prolonged bed rest. The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases advises limiting activities or exercises that cause pain, then gradually increasing physical activity as tolerated.
Notice how walking, sitting, sleep, work, lifting, or driving affects the discomfort. Do not force exercise through worsening pain, and contact a qualified healthcare professional if symptoms persist, limit normal activity, or concern you. New weakness, numbness, bowel or bladder changes, fever, major trauma, or rapidly worsening pain need prompt medical attention rather than online self-care.

ONE POSSIBLE OPTION
Could chiropractic care be appropriate for low back pain?
Chiropractic care is one of several non-drug approaches people may consider for some types of low back pain. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that spinal manipulation may lead to small improvements in pain and function for some people with acute or chronic low back pain. Results vary, and it is not appropriate for every person or every cause of pain.
An evaluation comes before treatment.
A chiropractor should take a health history, ask about your symptoms, and perform an appropriate examination. Share all relevant diagnoses, medicines, recent injuries, procedures, and pregnancy status. Dr. Anderson may recommend that you see another healthcare professional when symptoms appear outside the scope of chiropractic care.
No website can promise a diagnosis, cure, or particular result. Call the office if you are unsure whether scheduling a chiropractic evaluation makes sense for your situation.

Low back pain questions in Farmington
Can chiropractic care help every kind of back pain?
No. Back pain has many possible causes. An assessment helps determine whether chiropractic care may be appropriate or another healthcare professional is needed. Research suggests modest benefits from spinal manipulation for some people with low back pain; results vary.
What should I bring to a back-pain evaluation?
Bring a list of medicines, relevant reports and details about when symptoms began, where they travel, and which activities change them. Mention injuries, surgeries, pregnancy and any new weakness, numbness or bowel or bladder changes.
How will we know whether care is helping?
Discuss goals such as comfort, movement or daily activities and agree on a review point with Dr. Brittany. Improvement can take time, but follow-up visits should depend on your findings and progress. Contact the office if symptoms change, worsen or are not improving.
